Sacrifice is - etymologically - the action allowing man to connect with the numinous, the “divine”. Originally being the offering of a sensitive object to win the favours of higher powers, it has slowly been amalgamated to the idea of death, and - by euphemism - of loss, especially the inner loss to which we become worthy of
“celestial trade” : thus appears the sacrifice of self and the idea of individualisation and spiritual fulfilment. Sacrifice consists therefore of two poles : on one hand we offer, and on the other we deprive ourselves of what we offer, and this through a ritual of destruction, de-materialization, symbol of renunciation, in an expiatory and
purifying prospect. Also, the transition from animal sacrifice to human sacrifice distinguishes the accession to the idea of “self-sacrifice”. This idea is only transcended by the sacrifice of the divine to itself, notions which feature in trinity or messianic figures : sacrifice of the divine to create or simply perfect the world. There is consequently no possible evolution without the acceptance of death for every horizon, and ego inclination. Sacrifice imposes a psychic transformation,
forsaking everything or a part of self, to whom wishes to enrol in
a culture. Each spiritual reality implies sacrifice.
